TJOK AGUNG- BATIK ARTIST-BALI,
INDONESIA
Tjok Agung Pemayun, known as Pak Tjok,
is a quiet and generous man. Tjok, who lives in one of the oldest inhabited
regions of Bali, is committed to creating a sustainable economy for
his village, while preserving the natural dyed batik tradition. He has
offered land near a local temple for reforestation and organic agricultural
projects. A large part of his focus is growing natural dyes, such as
indigo, which can be used for coloring his work.
Batik is a technique where melted wax
is hand drawn or stamped onto a piece of cloth. Once the wax hardens
it becomes dye resistant, leaving the cloth underneath unaffected by
the dye. The wax is removed by boiling the cloth, then reapplied and
dyed again. The process is repeated until the desired pattern is achieved.
All batiks sold through The Loaded Trunk are numbered, making them truly
one of a kind.

kimonos, Flake has created pillows, table runners, scarves, and clutches
especially for The Loaded Trunk. The patterns and colors in these vintage
Japanese kimonos are not reproduced in modern kimono fabrics, making
the fabric alone unique and coveted. Flake’s work celebrates these
exquisite fabrics, while creating truly one of-a-kind pieces for The
Loaded Trunk.
MARK WESTERVELT~ KANSAS CITY,
MISSOURI-PAINT CHIP PAINTINGS
Mark Westervelt received his Bachelors
of Fine Art from The Kansas City Art Institute, and his Masters of Fine
Art from University of Chicago. The concept for his paint chip paintings
culminated as a byproduct of his work on canvas. To get a desired surface
he would repeatedly paint then scrape it away. This process gave birth
to the idea using the random beauty of the paint chip in its natural
form, and also manipulating it to represent a new form.
