Ex-voto is a Spanish word meaning votive offering. Often left at church alters in Mexico, these tell a
very touching personal story, which is what makes them so compelling.
The most common reason for giving thanks is health, where many dedicate
ex-votos after a surviving an operation or an accident. But almost any
subject is sufficient to justify creating one, whether it be success in
anything from finding a missing farm animal to attracting a spouse.
