Teofila is a storyteller. She uses back stitches, single and double cross-stitches and chain stitches to depict tales of the Purépecha people. Using cotton and yarn she embroiders brightly-colored scenes of cooking and fishing around Lake Patzcuaro in Michoacán, Mexico. The themes of the embroidered stories initially came from ancient Purépechan mythology but have come to include scenes of daily life.
