This brown and natural Kuba-cloth pillow is also known as raffia cloth. The Kuba artisans of the Congo hand cut, dye (using mud, indigo, or substances from the camwood tree), and then weave the strips of leaf to make the fabric. Small needle holes are sometimes visible from an original hand-sewn seam. Close inspection often reveals hand-sewn seams and other subtle marks from its past life. Made from vintage fabric that is approximately 50 years of age.
