Mexican Otomi Paper Hanging No. 1

This Otomi embroidered animal wall hanging is made with paper from the bark of the Jonote tree. It's soaked in a hot water bath with natural dyes such as flowers, ash, etc. Later the pulp strips are placed on a board in a grid form and hammered with a flat stone until the paper holds its form. Often the paper is decorated with natural found objects such as seeds and molded into fantastic patterns nothing short of amazing. These pieces have embroidered fabrics like on the Mexican coverlets.
