African Painted Barkcloth No. 9

Using a unique mixture of gardenia juice and black carbon on hand-pounded tree bark, these simple paintings are remarkable. Made by the M'buti Pygmy people living in the Ituri Rain Forest of the Congo, they speak clearly of human expression, or a moment in life. Their rippled three-dimensional textured surfaces become truly stunning when framed in shadow boxes or draped over an end table.
